Metito backs low temperature distillation to challenge lead desalination technologies

Dubai-based water technology firm, Metito, is set to make a "significant investment" in clean-tech company Thermal Purification Technologies (TPTec), to develop TPTec\''s patented low-temperature distillation (LTD) technology. Metito claims LTD could displace existing membrane and thermal desalination technologies.

Water technology firm Metito, is set to make a "significant investment" in clean-tech company Thermal Purification Technologies (TPTec), to develop TPTec\''s patented low-temperature distillation (LTD) technology which Metito claims could displace existing membrane and thermal desalination technologies.

LTD deploys low-grade waste heat to desalinate seawater and wastewater. According to Metito, LTD is capable of treating high-saline and polluted water. Metito said it will introduce, and help develop, LTD initially in markets across Asia and Africa, where the feasibility of desalination and the energy production resources required for water and wastewater purification are in short supply. In deploying low-tempeature heat from waste and renewable souces LTD is particularly suited to emerging markets said Metito.

Bassem Halabi, Metito Group Business Development Director, said: "LTD has the potential to redefine the practice of thermal desalination as it not only offers advanced benefits over existing thermal and membrane technologies, but it also provides significant energy and cost savings compared to other technologies."

Metito said it had the "scale, expertise and financial backing" " to bring on LTD "to become a mainstream solution". It pointed to its heavyweight shareholders who include Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Gulf Capital and the International Finance Corporation.

The technology can be retrofitted to existing plants to optimise processes, that produce waste heat without incurring huge investments said Metito. While LTD typically might be used in conjunction with other technologies, Metito said it foresees it quickly displacing current reverse osmosis and thermal desalination technologies.

"The process is very tolerant of salinity and is not limited to treating seawater, but also polluted water, brine from other desalination plants and various industrial wastewaters, including produced water from oil and gas exploration and mining which ordinarily can be problematic to deal with," Metito said.

Metito\''s compelling shareholder base that includes Mitsubishi Corporation (MC), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Gulf Capital and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Group has the scale, expertise and financial backing" to bring on LTD "to become a mainstream solution".

Wastewater treatment to benefit 100 towns in China after ADB funding

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a $300 million facility agreement with Sound Global to improve rural wastewater management using innovative technologies across the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Using the new technology, the project aims to treat 240,000 tons of wastewater per day in 100 townships by 2017.

The enormous volume of wastewater generated by the PRC’s rural areas - home to a half of the country’s population - poses a major environmental threat to the country’s rivers, lakes, and underground aquifers.

Outside of the major city areas, wastewater treatment facilities and sewage pipelines are scarce. Less than 20% of wastewater generated by rural areas is treated.

With the majority of untreated wastewater flowing directly back into the local surface water, the quality of the local water sources have greatly deteriorated over time, often exceeding their water quality limits.

This has a great sanitation impact on downstream local populations who depend on these local water sources for their water supply, according to ADB.

Hisaka Kimura, head of private sector infrastructure finance at ADB’s East Asia unit said: “By building and operating wastewater treatment plants with small modular automatic rapid technologies, smart solutions can be provided for small communities in rural areas which currently do not have wastewater treatment infrastructure.”

Aquifer storage and recovery project coming to Southern England

Utility Southern Water is planning an aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) project in the town of Worthing to help store drinking water for future use.

Although widely used in the US and with projects underway in the Middle East (see WWi article), other utilities such as Thames Water and Yorkshire Water are also evaluating the process.

For South Coast based Worthing, the ASR plan would involve taking river water during the winter, treating it and then transferring it to an aquifer to be stored until needed, for example in the summer months.

Southern Water’s pilot scheme would take place on the former Charmandean Quarry, near Lyons Farm retail park. It would involve drilling a new borehole on a working site of around 20m x 30m and laying a temporary water main and sewer.

A planning application is expected to be submitted to Worthing Borough Council and if successful, work on the ASR project would begin in early 2015.

The pilot borehole would take about four months to build, after which there would be a period of testing to help establish how much water a permanent scheme could supply, how sustainable it would be and the cost of building and running it.

The ASR project is part of the utility’s wider 25-year Water Resources Management Plan and was voted the most popular option for providing water, ahead of desalination by 1000 customers surveyed.

Meanwhile, in its Water Resources Programme, Thames Water said that ASR is “considered an important contingency option” and that there are a number of “sites in the Thames catchment were ASR could be viable”.

Second desalination plant now operational in drought-stricken Marshall Islands

Spectra Watemarkers, a specialist in energy-efficient, small-scale desalination systems, has provided a permanent solar and wind-powered water desalination plant on the remote atoll of Kili in the Marshall Islands, which is now operational and serves as the region\'s second facility of its kind.

Tom Vance of Moana Marine LLC installed the two Spectra LB-2800 reverse osmosis (RO) desalination systems, which convert seawater into over 5,600 gallons per day (GPD) of clean, fresh, EPA-approved drinking water. Before the installation, Kili\'s 1,200 residents suffered not only from drought but from polluted groundwater, which had to be boiled before drinking.

A typical desalinating plant of this size would be powered by a diesel generator. Because of the energy efficiency of the desalination systems, the whole plant can be powered by wind and solar power, saving thousands per year in fuel costs. Moreover, with increasingly expensive fuel and unreliable supplies due to seasonal rough seas, alternative energy-powered systems can assure a consistent, affordable water supply.

Spectra uses proprietary energy-recovery pumps. The two installations stand as a model for drought preparedness and safe, sustainable water production in the Pacific Island region. Earlier this year, a similar plant was installed on the atoll of Utrik, 400 miles to the north.

Major water distribution contract approved in city of San Antonio

Today in a unanimous vote, the San Antonio City Council approved a contract between the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) and Vista Ridge Consortium (VRC) to bring 16.3 billion gallons of new non-Edwards Aquifer water to San Antonio annually for 30 years, as well as own the pipeline used to transport the water.

The contract will require the transport of water from Burleson County through a 142-mile distribution pipeline. Council approval of the contract is the last step in a process that has been under consideration for over three years. VRC now has up to 30 months to arrange financing followed by 42 months to construct the project. SAWS payments to Vista Ridge will not begin until the project is delivering water.

VRC is a partnership between Abengoa and BlueWater Systems, which has assembled 3,400 leases for water rights with local landowners in Burleson and Milam counties. Under the terms of the contract, San Antonio will not pay for any water that is not made available for delivery, ultimately shifting major regulatory risks to the private developer instead of San Antonio ratepayers.

During the deepest stage of drought, San Antonio\'s access to the Edwards Aquifer is reduced by 44 percent. Water from the Vista Ridge project is a drought-proof supply that will be delivered even in the deepest drought.

SAWS set new benchmarks for transparency with a series of posted negotiation meetings that were open to the public and attended by the news media, elected officials, environmental groups, and general public. Contract terms have been a matter of public record since late July. SAWS provided public information on 188 different occasions, including community presentations, meetings and tours.

Since 1992, SAWS has been a leader in innovative water management strategies, making San Antonio one of the most resourceful cities for water. Further, water and wastewater services are provided to more than one million consumers in the San Antonio region.
